Spotlight Events 2019 

Here are some featured events happening during Make Music Day 2019. All events are FREE and open to all ages!

Boyd Plaza on Main Hampton

9:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m. | Make Music Day kicks off! Boyd Plaza is one of many venues hosting a variety of performances you should definitely check out. During your early morning coffee break or lunch, hang out on the plaza. 

9:00  – 11:00 a.m. | Piano players, amateur to professional, are welcomed to perform using Rice Music House‘s digital piano.  However we’ll unique performances from a variety of performers starting at 9:15 – 11:00 a.m. Hear some cool tunes on your way into work or during that early morning coffee break.

11: 00 a.m. –  1:00 p.m. | The Latin Caravan gives a dynamic performance on the plaza from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, The Drip and Scoopy Doo Gelato truck is making an  appearance on the plaza until 1:00 p.m. While you’re out enjoy the music-making fanfare and get a gelato or a lemonade too!

Bierkeller/Riverfront Park 

5:00 – 9:00 p.m. | Bierkeller returns to The Riverfront Park, bringing good beer and food by Wurst Wagon.  Hang out with us along the riverside and enjoy a family-friendly evening of music-making fun.  We’ll have Jess Oliver of Girls Rock Columbia strumming away with the ukuleles with attendees and teaching attendees how to bucket drum. Musician Jim “Wallstreet” Couillard is giving a harmonica lesson to attendees. DJ Preach Jacobs performing live sets throughout the night, with a chance for eager amateurs and professionals to perform during an open mic set.

Here’s a breakdown of our mass appeals at the Riverfront:

5:30 – 6:30 p.m. | Ukulele jam session: guests of all ages are welcome to pick up one of our free ukuleles and learn a few chords. Make sure stay put, attendees along with other ukulele have a chance to participate in a live ukulele group performance.

6:30 – 7:30 p.m. | Bucket Drum session: Make some beats along the riverside! Attendees are also welcome to bring their own makeshift drums too. Old speakers boxes, wooden boxes, etc. can be used for the drumming fun. 

7:15 – 8:15 p.m. | Harmonizing Harmonica session: Jim “Wallstreet” Couillard leads a harmonica learning session for all guests. Learn some tunes then harmonize with Wallstreet and musician Tom Coolidge for harmonica-infused performance. 

5:30 – 9:15 p.m. | Live music and Open mic with DJ Preach Jacobs. If you’re up for it spit out a new song or rap, this is a perfect time to do that! 

Rice Music House at the Village of Sandhills

10:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. | From morning until to the evening, Rice Music House at the Village at Sandhills offers a variety of performances. Artists from different backgrounds will perform on the stage at the Village Sandhills, featured performers include Freeway Music  and more. Make sure to put the Village of Sandhills on your TO-DO list for Make Music Columbia! 

Koger Center for the Arts

5:00 – 6:00 p.m. | Conductors Institute of South Carolina presents, Conductors of Tomorrow conducting the Aiken Symphony Orchestra. Conductors Breanna Thornton, Dylan Madoux, Max Kaiser, Joseph Cieslak, Samuel Lyons, Raphael Arenas Fernandez, and Sai Ho Ceng, are performing a FREE live concert for everyone. This special concert is brought to you by the Conductor Institute of SC, Nisan Ak, and yours truly the Koger Center for Arts. 

6:00 – 9:00 p.m. | The Koger Center hosts a A Midsummer Night’s Swing featuring The Mark Rapp Group. Free and open to the public. Guests are getting the Mark Rapp jazz experience. Hear a remix of Felix Mendelssohn music of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Enjoy musical lectures, ballroom swing dancing, and a wine tasting and a jazz concert brought to you by the Mark Rapp Group. Specific time are TBA. Make sure to mark you calendars!

University of South Carolina String Project

Location: 851 Park Street, Columbia, SC 29201

11:00 – 11:30 a.m. | The String Project adult orchestra performs several new pieces they have rehearsed. Guests have a chance to hear the orchestra perform for the first time before an of friends, family, and Make Music Day enthusiasts. Weather permitting, the orchestra will be out on the sidewalk.  FREE. 

Music & Arts 

Location: 4611 HardScrabble Rd Suite 112, Columbia, SC 29229

6:00 – 8:00 p.m. | Music & Arts is hosting a  FREE Open Mic night 6-8pm on Friday June 21 for the entire community. Sign up as a performer, or come down to watch! Electricity, a PA system and a piano keyboard are available at the venue. The fun continues on Saturday with free guitar lessons and free guitar offers. Address, details and RSVP here:

5:00 – 9:00 p.m. | Robert Gardiner Jazz Trio with vocalist Kristi Hood. The trio performs jazz standards from the Great American Songbook.
